Assam: 55-Year-Old Gets 20 Years Jail Under POCSO for Rape of Minor in Dhubri

Dhubri Court Sentences Man to 20 Years Rigorous Imprisonment for Raping 7-Year-Old Girl

Dhubri, Assam, Sept 9: A Dhubri court has sentenced 55-year-old Safiuddin Ali alias Basu to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the rape of a seven-year-old girl. Along with the sentence, the court also imposed a fine of ₹15,000, with an additional two months of jail time in case of default.

The verdict was pronounced on September 9 by Special Judge Rini Bharali of the Additional Sessions Court-cum-Special Court (POCSO). The accused, a resident of Bidyapara Part-II in Dhubri, was found guilty under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act read with Section 376AB of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Case Background

The case dates back to March 5, 2024, when the victim’s father lodged a complaint at Bazar Town Outpost under Dhubri Sadar Police Station. According to the FIR, Basu lured the child to his house and committed the heinous crime. The incident came to light after the girl narrated her ordeal to her mother.

Following the complaint, police arrested Basu the very next day and produced him before the court.

Trial and Proceedings

During the trial, the court examined nine witnesses to establish the charges. On July 21, 2025, Basu’s defense counsel withdrew from the case, after which a legal aid counsel was appointed to represent him.

The prosecution was led by Special Public Prosecutor Rituparna Guha, who successfully argued for strict punishment considering the gravity of the offence.

Court’s Judgment

After hearing both sides and reviewing the evidence, the Special Court delivered its judgment, sentencing Basu to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposing a fine of ₹15,000.

The judgment sends a strong message against crimes committed under the POCSO Act, reaffirming the judiciary’s commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of children.
