Empowering Micro Food Processing Enterprises: The Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme

A Game-Changing Initiative to Revolutionize the Food Processing Sector
GUWAHATI: In a significant move to promote and formalize micro food processing enterprises, the Government of India has launched the Pradhan Mantri Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) Scheme. As a seasoned journalist with extensive experience in covering business and economic affairs, I bring you an insightful analysis of this game-changing initiative.

The PMFME Scheme:

The PMFME Scheme, with a whopping budget of 10,000 crores, aims to uplift and support 2,00,000 micro food processing enterprises across the country. Under the implementation of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MOFPI), this flagship program is set to transform the food processing sector. Assam, with its ambitious target of formalizing 12,462 micro food processing enterprises by 2024-25, stands as a shining example of the scheme's potential impact.

State Nodal Department and Agency:

In Assam, the Department of Industries, Commerce and Public Enterprise takes charge as the State Nodal Department, while the Assam Industrial Development Corporation Ltd. serves as the State Nodal Agency responsible for the smooth execution of the scheme. At the grassroots level, the District Industries & Commerce Centers (DICCs) assume the role of District Nodal Offices, working closely with local enterprises.

Eligibility and Benefits:

Micro Food Processing Enterprises, including FPOs/SHGs/Cooperatives or SPVs of micro food processing enterprises, are eligible to apply for the scheme. These enterprises engage in food processing activities with an investment of up to 1 crore and an annual turnover not exceeding 5 crores. PMFME provides a wide range of benefits, such as seed capital support of up to 40,000/- per SHG member. Additionally, micro food processing units can avail credit-linked capital subsidies of up to 35% of the eligible project cost, with a maximum ceiling of 10 lakhs per unit. Furthermore, groups and Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) of micro food processing enterprises can enjoy a significant 50% financial grant for branding and marketing support.

Unleashing Potential and Revitalizing the Sector:

The PMFME Scheme has the potential to revolutionize the micro food processing sector in Assam and beyond. By providing financial assistance, technical support, and opportunities for growth, the scheme empowers entrepreneurs to upgrade their existing units or establish new ones. From jams, pickles, and sauces to bakery items, dairy products, and beyond, a vast array of products can benefit from this initiative.
