Desperate Couple Accused of Selling Children Amidst Financial Hardship
Chirang District's Heartbreaking Tale of Struggling Parents
In a heart-wrenching case from Chirang district, a young couple finds themselves in a dire situation, accused of selling their own children due to overwhelming financial difficulties.

Hugam Narzary (25) and Bijulika Narzary (23), residents of Shilikhaguri in Chirang district, have been grappling with the harsh realities of poverty, trying to make ends meet for their two young sons amidst immense adversity.

Their harrowing ordeal began when they faced a gut-wrenching decision: unable to afford vital medical treatment for their one-and-a-half-year-old son, they resorted to selling him for a meager sum of Rs. 40,000. The buyer, Avinash Borgyari, hails from Khungring village.

Tragedy struck the family once more, just a week after the birth of their second son in July this year. Overwhelmed by yet another round of financial despair, they felt compelled to part with their newborn child, this time for Rs. 60,000, to Niran Swargiyari, a resident of Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district.

This disturbing incident came to light when Officer-in-Charge Biplab Konwar of the Runikhita police station initiated an investigation based on specific information. Swift police action led to the apprehension of the distressed couple, and further inquiries are currently underway to unravel the full extent of this tragic situation.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the deep-rooted issues of poverty and lack of social safety nets that continue to plague certain regions, pushing vulnerable families to make unthinkable decisions. The authorities are now faced with the task of addressing not only the legal aspects but also the underlying societal factors that led to this distressing episode.
