Manipur: UN Human Rights Expresses Concerns Over Vandalization of Activist Babloo Loitongbam's Residence
Local Outfits Meitei Leepun and Arambai Tengol Accused; Calls for Protection and Accountability
Manipur, India - October 06, 2023: In a troubling turn of events, the United Nations Human Rights has raised alarm over the recent vandalization of the residence of activist Babloo Loitongbam in Manipur. What amplifies the gravity of this incident is the UN Human Rights' direct accusation of the local groups Meitei Leepun and Arambai Tengol for their alleged involvement.

In a statement posted on X, the UN Human Rights declared, "We are alarmed by threats to human rights defender Babloo Loitongbam by Meitei Leepun & Arambai Tengol groups in Manipur for speaking out on inter-communal violence since May. We urge authorities to protect him, his family & home, & hold perpetrators accountable."

The reaction from the UN Human Rights comes in response to a disturbing incident that unfolded on October 5 when unidentified individuals reportedly forcefully entered the residence of Babloo Loitongbam, the director of Human Rights Alert. The incident occurred in Kwakeithel Thiyam Leikai, situated within the Imphal West district.

According to reliable sources, a group of approximately 30-40 unidentified individuals descended upon Loitongbam's residence at approximately 6:30 pm. During this intrusion, these unidentified individuals allegedly wreaked havoc by vandalizing various household properties, including a car, chairs, and window panes.

Swift action was taken by law enforcement in response to this distressing event. A team comprising officers from the Lamphel Police Station and Imphal West district Police promptly arrived at the scene to address the situation and implement necessary security measures.

The incident has raised significant concerns not only within Manipur but also on an international scale, as human rights organizations and the United Nations emphasize the importance of protecting individuals who speak out on critical issues. The call for accountability for those responsible for the vandalism underscores the commitment to upholding the principles of justice and human rights.

As investigations into this unfortunate incident continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of Babloo Loitongbam, his family, and the preservation of their rights, as well as bringing those responsible for the act to justice.
