ZPM Leader Sworn In, Ending MNF and Congress Dominance
Aizawl- Dec 08, 2023: In a groundbreaking political shift on December 8, 2023, Lalduhoma, the leader of the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), assumed the role of Mizoram's Chief Minister, marking a significant departure from the longstanding dominance of the Mizo National Front (MNF) and the Congress party.
The ZPM, emerging as a political force in 2019, secured a remarkable victory in the recent Mizoram Assembly elections, capturing 27 out of the 40 available seats. The swearing-in ceremony, conducted at the Raj Bhavan complex in Aizawl and overseen by Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, introduced seven ministers into the ZPM-led government, including K Sapdanga, Vanlalhlana, C lalsawivunga, Lalthasanga, Vanlalthlana, PC Vanlalruata, and Lalrinpuii.
At 73 years old, Lalduhoma brings a diverse background to his new position, having served as an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and as the security in-charge for former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. His political journey, marked by resilience, includes overcoming disqualification under the anti-defection law and winning a by-election for the Serchhip seat in 2021.
The swearing-in ceremony not only signifies a change in leadership but also represents a shift in Mizoram's political narrative. The ZPM, positioning itself as a genuine regional party, challenges the MNF's historical claims of Mizo nationalism.
Lalduhoma's elevation to the Chief Minister's office is not just a personal triumph; it reflects the ZPM's rapid ascent in Mizoram's political arena. This transition ushers in a 'new system,' putting an end to the 36-year duopoly of the MNF and Congress. Under Lalduhoma's seasoned leadership, Mizoram anticipates a new direction, marking a defining moment in its political evolution.
