PM Modi Showers Praise on Meghalaya’s Eri Silk in ‘Mann Ki Baat’, Calls it Symbol of India’s Heritage
New Delhi, June 30 — In the 123rd episode of his monthly radio address ‘Mann Ki Baat’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi applauded Meghalaya’s Eri silk and traditional handicrafts, describing them as shining examples of India's rich cultural legacy.
Highlighting the recent Geographical Indication (GI) tag awarded to Eri silk, PM Modi called it a moment of pride for the entire nation. “Eri silk is not merely a fabric; it embodies the heritage of Meghalaya, nurtured over generations by communities like the Khasi,” he said.
The Prime Minister emphasized the silk's eco-friendly and ethical production method, commonly known as ‘Ahimsa silk’, where silkworms are not harmed during the extraction process. He also noted its versatility, pointing out that it provides comfort across seasons — warm in winter, cool in summer — making it a perfect choice for global markets.
‘Vocal for Local’ and Women Empowerment
Modi further lauded the crucial role of women-led Self Help Groups (SHGs) in driving the Eri silk revolution in the region. “These women are not only preserving traditional weaving techniques but also creating sustainable livelihoods and empowering local communities,” he stated.
The Prime Minister once again reiterated his appeal to citizens to buy and promote indigenous products, under the ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan’ initiatives. “India’s self-reliance will accelerate if both consumers and traders prioritize Indian-made goods,” he remarked.
Conrad Sangma Responds with Gratitude
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed gratitude for the Prime Minister’s words. A week prior, Sangma had gifted Eri silk fabric — woven by women artisans of the state — to PM Modi. “Thank you Hon’ble PM for recognizing our heritage textiles and encouraging our weavers,” Sangma posted on X.
He further noted that global interest in eco-conscious and ethically produced fabrics like Eri silk is on the rise, positioning Meghalaya as a strong player in the sustainable textile industry.
