Assam Scripts New History with Oil Production at Namrup-Borhat Block in 2025
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister on Tuesday highlighted a major milestone in the state’s economic journey, stating that Assam has become the first Indian state in 2025 to be actively engaged in oil production following the discovery of oil in the Namrup-Borhat block.
Taking to , the Chief Minister said Assam’s identity is no longer confined to its rich historical legacy but is now being reshaped by new achievements in industry and energy.
“Assam is not only defined by its glorious past, it is steadily shaping new milestones. In 2025, Assam became the first State to be engaged in oil production with the discovery of oil in the Namrup-Borhat block,” CM Sarma posted.
Oil Discovery to Strengthen Assam’s Economy
According to the Chief Minister, the commencement of oil production in the Namrup-Borhat block is expected to significantly strengthen government revenue and play a crucial role in accelerating the state’s overall economic growth.
Experts believe that this development will reduce Assam’s dependence on external energy sources while positioning the state as a key contributor to India’s domestic oil output. Increased revenue from royalties, taxes, and associated industries is also likely to enhance public spending on infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
Strategic Importance of Namrup-Borhat Block
The Namrup-Borhat region has long been considered geologically promising. The successful discovery and production of oil from this block underlines Assam’s strategic importance in India’s energy security framework.
Industry observers note that oil production in this block could open the door for further exploration activities, encourage private and public sector investment, and generate employment opportunities for local youth, particularly in Upper Assam.
Assam’s Expanding Role in India’s Energy Sector
Assam has historically been associated with India’s earliest oil fields, including Digboi. The new oil discovery in 2025 reinforces the state’s legacy while marking a transition toward modern, technology-driven exploration and production.
The state government has repeatedly emphasized balanced development—ensuring industrial growth while safeguarding environmental and community interests. Officials indicate that strict environmental norms and local participation will remain central to future energy projects.
Vision Beyond the Past
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s statement reflects the government’s broader vision of transforming Assam into an industrial and economic hub of Northeast India. With improved connectivity, investor-friendly policies, and now fresh momentum in the energy sector, Assam appears poised for sustained growth in the coming years.
The Namrup-Borhat oil production milestone, officials say, is not just an economic achievement but a signal that Assam is confidently stepping into a new era of development.
