The incident occurred after an argument over roadside urination, with both the victim and the accused intoxicated. The trial lasted over three years, with 56 witnesses testifying. TRIPURA: Four individuals have been handed life imprisonment and fined Rs 50,000 each for the brutal murder of a bank official, Bodhisatta Das, in Tripura. The District and Session Judge of West Tripura District, Subhasish Sharma Roy, pronounced Sumit Bank, Sumit Chowdhury, Sukanta Biswas, and Omar Sharif, also known as Shoaib Mia, guilty of the heinous crime committed on the intervening night of August 3-4, 2019.

The fatal incident occurred in Agartala after a heated argument erupted between the victim and the accused over urinating on the roadside. Both parties were under the influence of alcohol at the time, exacerbating the confrontation.

The trial for the case has been ongoing for over three years, during which a total of 56 witnesses came forward to testify against the accused. However, two witnesses, Basu Kar and Dr. Abhijit Das of GBP hospital's trauma centre, turned hostile during the proceedings. The prosecution lawyer, Samrat Kar Bhowmik, announced that separate legal actions would be taken against these individuals for providing false testimony.

Sukanta Biswas, one of the convicted individuals, held the position of a traffic police sub-inspector, while the others were traders. The judgment, although delivering justice to the victim's family, faced criticism from the defense lawyer, senior advocate Pijush Kanti Biswas, who expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict. He vowed to file an appeal against the district court's decision in the Tripura High Court, seeking a review of the case.

The conviction and sentencing of the four individuals reflect the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for the victims of such heinous crimes.
