IMD Forecasts Heavy Rains and Thunderstorms in Assam and Northeastern States

Guwahati: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a significant weather alert, warning of heavy rains and thunderstorms in Assam and the northeastern states from July 7 to July 11.

As per the latest IMD report, isolated areas in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are likely to experience thunderstorms and lightning during this period. Furthermore, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in specific locations of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya, while Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram can anticipate heavy rainfall.

While certain regions in Assam have shown signs of improvement in the flood situation, the upcoming spell of rain poses a potential risk of exacerbating the scenario. In response, authorities have issued a severe flood alert across Assam. Notably, the Brahmaputra River is projected to witness a rise of 5-20 cm on July 7.

The Regional Meteorological Department (RMC) in Guwahati has released a statement emphasizing the likelihood of widespread rainfall with heavy to very heavy intensity, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. These weather conditions are expected to persist over the Northeast region for the next five days, driven by strong low-level southerly and southwesterly winds originating from the Bay of Bengal and continuing their trajectory towards Northeast India.

This weather alert from the IMD serves as a crucial advisory for residents and authorities in the region, urging them to remain cautious and take necessary precautions in anticipation of the heavy rainfall and associated risks during the specified period from July 7 to July 11.
