Assam's Taxation Debate Intensifies: Minister Hazarika Challenges Congress Leader to Debate, CM Sarma Defends Measures
CM Sarma Clarifies: Rs 300 Processing Fee Crucial for Funding Traditional Cultural Festivals
Guwahati, 23 November, 2023: In a escalating debate over the taxation of Bihu functions in Assam, Minister Pijush Hazarika has issued a challenge to Congress leader Bhupen Borah, demanding a thorough debate on the financial implications surrounding cultural events in the state. Adding fuel to the fire, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media on X to address the controversy.

CM Sarma defended the taxation policy, emphasizing the necessity of the Rs 300 processing fee for permissions. He clarified, "It is important to note that we are allocating nearly 50 crores this year for organizing our traditional cultural festivals. For instance, if a Bihu committee receives 1.5 lakhs from the government, it is unlikely that anyone would criticize us for collecting Rs 300 for the state exchequer, especially considering that this amount is earmarked for the police department."

Sarma further highlighted the government's commitment to supporting cultural events, stating, "As part of our government's initiatives, the Government of Assam is now providing Rs 1.5 lakhs to Bihu committee for organizing the Bihu festival. This marks the first time such support is being provided under our administration."

The Chief Minister's posts shed light on the broader context of the taxation issue, pointing out the substantial financial backing the government is providing for cultural festivals. This move aims to justify the processing fee by underlining the significant budget allocated for organizing traditional events, with a specific focus on contributing to the police department.

As the political discourse continues, the invitation for a debate from Minister Hazarika and the Chief Minister's social media posts inject new dimensions into the ongoing controversy, setting the stage for a more comprehensive examination of the taxation policies surrounding Bihu functions in Assam.
