Historic Decision: Kuki and Biate Communities on Track for Tribal Recognition in Assam
Assam Cabinet's Landmark Decisions: Empowering Community Representation in Biate and Initiating Khasi-Jaintia Development Council
Guwahati, Assam - 17 November, 2023: Under the astute leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Assam Cabinet made historic decisions on November 16, prioritizing community representation in Biate and introducing the Khasi-Jaintia Development Council for tailored development.

Inclusion of 'Biate' as a Distinct Entry: A Pioneering Move

A groundbreaking decision emerged from the Assam Cabinet as the State Government expressed its intention to submit a proposal to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India. This proposal advocates for the inclusion of 'Biate' as a distinct entry, signaling a pivotal move towards acknowledging the unique socio-cultural identity of the Biate community in the district of Dima Hasao and  Karbi Anglong.

The proposal further seeks the exclusion of 'Biate, Biete' from the existing list under "7. Any Kuki Tribes including" in the Schedule to the Constitution (ST) Order, 1950, as amended. By carving out a specific entry for 'Biate,' the Assam Cabinet aims to empower and recognize the distinct aspirations and cultural heritage of this community.

This transformative step reflects a nuanced understanding of the socio-cultural dynamics in Karbi Anglong and emphasizes the government's commitment to fostering inclusivity by acknowledging and preserving the identity of the 'Biate' community.

Khasi-Jaintia Development Council: Tailored Development for Unique Needs

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced another crucial decision - the approval of the creation of the Khasi-Jaintia Development Council. This move is specifically designed to address the unique needs and concerns of the Khasi and Jaintia communities in the North Cachar Hills region.

The establishment of the Khasi-Jaintia Development Council signifies a shift towards community-centric development initiatives. The council's formation aims to enhance community representation and ensures that developmental efforts are tailored to meet the distinct requirements of the Khasi and Jaintia communities.

By creating a dedicated development council, the Assam Cabinet demonstrates its commitment to fostering regional development that respects and integrates the diverse cultural fabric of Assam. This decision marks a significant milestone in the state's journey towards inclusive and community-driven governance.

As these decisions take effect, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's vision, they pave the way for a more empowered and culturally sensitive Assam, where community representation is not only recognized but actively integrated into the development narrative of the state.
