In a significant development for Arunachal Pradesh, the state government has formalized a groundbreaking agreement with Tehri Hydropower Development Corporation India Ltd (THDCIL) for the ambitious Kalai-II hydroelectric project. The signing ceremony, presided over by Chief Secretary Dharmendra, marked a pivotal moment in the state's pursuit of hydropower initiatives.

This collaboration comes on the heels of Arunachal Pradesh's strategic agreements with central Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) NHPC, SJVN, and NEEPCO in August. These agreements, covering 12 hydropower projects across Subansiri, Dibang, and Siang basins, collectively contribute 11,517 MW to the state's energy landscape.

The Kalai-II project, boasting a substantial investment of Rs 13,000 crore, signifies THDCIL's inaugural venture in the region. State Hydropower Commissioner Ankur Garg and THDCIL’s director (technical) Bhupender Gupta played key roles in finalizing the agreement, emphasizing the collaborative efforts between the government and the corporation.

During the construction phase, the project is anticipated to inject over Rs 13,000 crore into the state's economy. Post-commissioning, the hydroelectric facility is expected to yield an annual revenue exceeding Rs 300 crore, contributing significantly to the state's power generation capabilities.

Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein expressed optimism about the project's broader impact on the Lohit basin area. Beyond its energy contributions, Mein highlighted the project's role in fostering historic development and employment opportunities.

Furthermore, Mein emphasized the state government's substantial equity stake in the project, standing at 26%. This ownership structure positions the state to not only benefit economically but also generate dividends, further bolstering Arunachal Pradesh's financial standing.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu conveyed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Power Minister RK Singh for their steadfast support in revitalizing the Kalai-II project. Khandu reiterated the state's commitment to fully harness its hydropower potential, positioning Arunachal Pradesh as a crucial player in meeting the nation's growing energy demands. The agreement signifies a momentous stride towards sustainable energy development, marking a historic chapter in Arunachal Pradesh's energy journey.
