Assam DGP GP Singh Vows to Recover INR 1643 Crores from Bandh Organizers
Assam DGP Highlights Financial Implications of Bandh Calls
Guwahati, 29 February, 24:  a significant announcement, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam, G.P. Singh, shed light on the substantial economic consequences associated with bandh calls in the state. Referring to a directive from the Hon’ble Gauhati High Court, Singh emphasized that a single day's bandh could result in an estimated loss of approximately INR 1643 Crores. This staggering amount, as outlined in Para 35(9) of a previous court order, would be recoverable from those responsible for initiating or supporting such disruptive actions.

The DGP's statement serves as a stark reminder of the financial burden and legal accountability associated with organizing or endorsing bandh calls in Assam. By reiterating the court's directive, Singh aims to underscore the importance of adhering to legal protocols and preventing unwarranted disruptions that can adversely affect the state's economy. This reaffirms the judiciary's commitment to upholding law and order while promoting responsible civic behavior.

Bandh calls, often used as a form of protest or agitation, have been a contentious issue in Assam and other parts of India. While individuals and groups have the right to express dissent, the economic repercussions of bandh-related disruptions can be severe, impacting businesses, livelihoods, and overall socio-economic stability. Singh's emphasis on financial accountability seeks to discourage the misuse of bandh calls and encourage peaceful means of expression and resolution.

As Assam continues to progress and develop, it is imperative for all stakeholders to prioritize constructive dialogue and lawful methods of protest. Singh's intervention underscores the importance of striking a balance between exercising democratic rights and safeguarding the state's economic interests. Through collective efforts and adherence to legal frameworks, Assam can foster an environment conducive to growth, stability, and prosperity for all its residents.
