Truckers Allege 'Goonda Tax' Extortion by Manipur Police at Assam Border
Tale of Two Police Forces: Truckers Laud Assam Cops, Slam Manipur Over 'Goonda Tax'
In a stark contrast to the widely praised conduct of the Assam Police, allegations of hooliganism and extortion have surfaced against the Manipur Police at the Jirighat checkpoint on the Assam-Manipur border in Cachar district. Truck drivers transporting goods to Manipur have accused the state's police personnel of demanding and collecting 'goonda tax' (extortion money) from them, raising concerns over the authorities' conduct.

The incident has sparked outrage among the trucking community, with many drivers expressing their frustration and vowing to avoid future trips to Manipur until the situation is resolved. The allegations paint a grim picture, with truck drivers alleging that they were subjected to intimidation and harassment by the Manipur Police if they refused to pay the 'goonda tax'.

One driver, revealed the harrowing ordeal they face at the border. "Within a span of just 1 kilometer, there are 10 to 15 police checkpoints, and at each one, they demand between Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1,500 from us," he said. "How can we afford to pay such exorbitant amounts? Our vehicles have been stranded for more than 12 days due to this extortion racket."

In stark contrast, the Assam Police personnel stationed at the same checkpoint have been widely praised for their professionalism and conduct. Truckers have commended the Assam Police for ensuring smooth operations and providing assistance when needed, further highlighting the stark disparity in the behavior of the two state police forces.

The allegations against the Manipur Police have raised concerns among stakeholders and authorities, prompting calls for immediate action to address the issue and restore the confidence of the trucking community. Failure to address these concerns could potentially disrupt the supply chain and have far-reaching economic consequences for the region.

Truckers and transport associations have demanded strict action against any police personnel found guilty of extortion or misconduct, emphasizing the need for a corruption-free and secure environment for the transportation of goods.
