NPP blames Chief Minister N. Biren Singh’s administration for failing to restore peace and order in Manipur.
Imphal: The National People's Party (NPP), led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, has officially withdrawn its support from the BJP-led government in Manipur. The decision comes amid escalating ethnic violence and criticism of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh's handling of the crisis, which has left thousands displaced and the state's law and order situation in disarray.
In a letter to BJP national president JP Nadda, Sangma expressed "deep concern" over the inability of the Manipur government to restore peace and normalcy. "The situation in Manipur has spiraled out of control, with innocent lives lost and communities suffering. The current leadership has failed to address these critical issues," the letter stated.
NPP's Representation in Manipur Assembly
The NPP, which played a pivotal role in the previous coalition government, has seven MLAs in the Manipur Assembly:
- Sheikh Noorul Hassan (Kshetrigao Assembly Constituency)
- Khuraijam Loken Singh (Wangoi Assembly Constituency)
- Irengbam Nalini Devi (Oinam Assembly Constituency)
- Thongam Shanti Singh (Moirang Assembly Constituency)
- Mayanglambam Rameshwar Singh (Kakching Assembly Constituency)
- N. Kayisii (Tadubi Assembly Constituency)
- Janghemlung Panmei (Tamenglong Assembly Constituency)
BJP Retains Majority Despite NPP Exit
Despite the withdrawal, the BJP-led government remains stable, holding a comfortable majority of 37 seats in the 60-member Assembly. The BJP also has the backing of regional allies and independents, including the Naga People’s Front (NPF) with five MLAs, one JD(U) legislator, and three Independent MLAs.
Ethnic Violence and Political Uncertainty
Manipur has been reeling under ethnic violence for months, with thousands displaced and tensions running high across communities. The NPP's withdrawal has further heightened the political uncertainty, adding pressure on the state government to address the deepening crisis.
