Tea Garden Workers Get 16% Pay Raise in Tripura – Full Details Inside

TRIPURA, June 20, 2025: In a major relief for thousands of tea garden workers, the Government of Tripura has announced a 16% hike in the daily wages of labourers employed in the state’s tea plantations. The decision was revealed by Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Roy during a press conference held in Agartala on Thursday.

With this move, the daily wage for tea plantation workers will see a significant increase, benefiting over 20,000 labourers working across Tripura's 54 tea estates. The government aims to improve the living standards and financial security of workers who form the backbone of the state’s tea industry.

Speaking to the media, Minister Tinku Roy emphasized that the wage hike reflects the state government’s continued commitment to the welfare of tea garden workers. He said the revised wages would help workers cope with inflation and rising living costs.

“This wage increase is a long-overdue step towards ensuring fair pay for the hard work of tea plantation labourers. We are committed to supporting them with better pay and improved working conditions,” said Roy.

The 16% wage hike is expected to inject fresh momentum into the tea industry by boosting worker morale and enhancing productivity. Additionally, the increased income is likely to improve household consumption in rural areas, contributing to local economic development.

Trade unions and worker associations have welcomed the decision, calling it a “much-needed and just” response to their long-standing demands. However, some worker leaders have urged the government to ensure timely implementation and consider further social benefits like housing, healthcare, and education support.

This announcement follows a series of discussions between the state government, plantation owners, and worker unions. The Tripura government has also hinted at additional welfare schemes for tea garden communities, including health insurance and skill development programs.

Officials have confirmed that the new wage structure will come into effect from the next payment cycle, and district labor officers have been instructed to oversee its implementation.
