Amit Shah Vows Infiltrator-Free Assam, Pays Tribute to Golap Borbora

Amit Shah Reaffirms BJP’s Mission to Make Assam Infiltrator-Free, Honours Golap Borbora’s Legacy

Guwahati, Aug 29: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday reiterated the BJP’s commitment to making Assam free from illegal infiltrators. He was speaking at a programme in Guwahati marking the birth centenary of Golap Borbora, Assam’s first non-Congress Chief Minister.

Shah underlined that the high-powered demography mission announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a crucial initiative to detect and eliminate illegal foreigners from the country.

Recalling Borbora’s historic decision in 1978 to launch a voter list cleansing drive, which identified nearly 37,000 illegal foreigners, Shah said it laid the foundation for the Assam Agitation. He criticised opposition parties for resisting the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) voter roll cleansing exercise, calling it a reflection of “political moral degradation.”

Lauding Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Shah praised Assam’s efforts against infiltrators and encroachment, noting that Sarma has upheld Borbora’s socialist values despite Borbora not being associated with the BJP.

The Home Minister also highlighted Borbora’s welfare measures, including free education up to Class 10 and land tax waivers for farmers, drawing parallels with the Modi government’s initiatives to honour unsung leaders like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

By paying tribute to Borbora’s contributions, Shah emphasized that the BJP is committed to safeguarding Assam’s identity, ensuring development, and continuing the fight against illegal infiltration.
