Assam CM Criticizes Congress Response to Rahul Gandhi Verdict: Calls Out Double Standards
Himanta Biswa Sarma Questions Judiciary's Double Standard Amid Rahul Gandhi Verdict.
Guwahati, August 05, 2023: Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, has criticized the Congress party for their response to the recent Supreme Court ruling on Rahul Gandhi.

Sarma highlighted what he sees as a double standard, pointing out that the judiciary faces criticism when it delivers convictions but is praised when it grants bail. The Supreme Court recently stayed Rahul Gandhi's conviction in a 2019 defamation case related to his remarks about the "Modi surname," a decision that was welcomed by the state Congress.

Debabrata Saikia, a prominent Congress leader, expressed his satisfaction with the court's verdict, believing that justice had been served. He saw the ruling as a pathway for Rahul Gandhi's return to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India's Parliament.

Saikia alleged that the BJP had conspired to remove Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha. However, with the court's decision, Gandhi can continue representing the people and advocating for their concerns within the Parliament.

The defamation case was originally filed by former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi, along with other BJP leaders. The case was in response to Rahul Gandhi's comment questioning the prevalence of the "Modi" surname among individuals engaged in theft.
