Cloudburst Triggers Devastating Flash Floods in Sikkim, Leaving 23 Army Personnel and 20 Civilians Missing
Prime Minister Extends Support:
Narendra Modi Assures Sikkim of Full Assistance in Crisis
Sikkim, India - October 04 2023: In a devastating natural calamity, a cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in north Sikkim has led to flash floods in the Teesta river, resulting in the disappearance of at least 23 Army personnel and 20 civilians. The incident has prompted a massive search and rescue operation in the affected regions of Sikkim.

The catastrophe unfolded when water was released from the Chungthang dam, causing an abrupt surge in water levels downstream, reaching up to 15-20 feet high. Consequently, Army vehicles stationed at Bardang near Singtam were engulfed by the sudden deluge, leading to the reported disappearance of 23 personnel. Some vehicles remain submerged beneath the slush, further complicating the rescue efforts.

Sikkim experienced heavy rainfall throughout the night, exacerbating the situation. The overflow of Lhonak Lake, situated in north Sikkim, contributed to the rapid rise in water levels within the Teesta river. The Teesta river flows through Sikkim and West Bengal before ultimately entering Bangladesh.

Expressing his concern, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that he had spoken with the Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Prem Singh Tamang Golay, and assured him of full support during this trying time. In a tweet, PM Modi said, "Spoke to Sikkim CM Shri @PSTamangGolay and took stock of the situation in the wake of the unfortunate natural calamity in parts of the state. Assured all possible support in addressing the challenge. I pray for the safety and well-being of all those affected."

The Sikkim administration has issued a high alert for residents, urging them to exercise caution. Disturbing videos shared by local residents depict roads washed away and the river in a tumultuous state.

Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries, but the damage to public property is significant. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, who visited an affected area, assured the public that relief operations are underway to mitigate the impact of the disaster.

The India Meteorological Department has warned of continued risks, as the Teesta river remains swollen due to the overflow from Chungthang Lake. "Low-lying areas such as Gazoldoba, Domohani, Mekhaliganj, and Ghish may be affected. Please be alert," the weather office cautioned.

As the search and rescue efforts continue in the affected regions of Sikkim, the nation stands united in support of those affected by this calamity, hoping for the swift and safe recovery of the missing individuals and the restoration of normalcy in the affected areas.
