Gauhati High Court Grants Bail to Social Media Influencer Sumi Borah in Dibrugarh Trading Scam Case

The court cites lack of direct evidence and prolonged custody as reasons for her release; co-accused also granted bail earlier this month.

Dibrugarh, Assam | May 21, 2025 — In a major development in the high-profile trading scam case registered at Barbaruah Police Station in Dibrugarh district, the Gauhati High Court has granted bail to social media influencer Sumi Borah, effectively ending her judicial custody across all pending cases related to the alleged financial fraud.

Borah, who had been under judicial custody for several weeks, was released after the court found insufficient material evidence directly linking her to the scam. Her legal representative argued that although she was named in the First Information Report (FIR), no substantial proof indicated her active participation in the financial irregularities.

“The arrest memo itself failed to mention specific grounds for her detention, and there is no concrete evidence showing her involvement in any fraudulent transaction,” the advocate added.

The court also considered the extended time Borah had already spent in custody and observed that further detention without compelling evidence would be unjustified. Based on these factors, the High Court approved her bail application.

This decision comes shortly after similar bail was granted to her husband, Tarkik Borah, and her associate Bishal Phukan, both of whom were released on May 3 in the final pending case against them.

The trading scam case, which allegedly involves unauthorized investment activities and significant financial losses to several individuals, had sparked widespread public interest and scrutiny on social media, particularly due to the involvement of known influencers.

As the investigation continues, the court's decision underscores the importance of concrete evidence in legal proceedings involving financial crimes and highlights the need for due process in high-profile arrests.
