Guwahati shaken as police uncover shocking details of a child's murder allegedly planned by his own mother and her live-in partner
Guwahati, May 11, 2025:
In a chilling case that has horrified residents of Guwahati, police have arrested a woman and her partner for the murder of her 10-year-old son, whose dismembered body was found inside a suitcase dumped near the Forest Department office at Basistha.
The deceased child, identified as Mrinmoy Barman, was a Class 5 student at Navodaya Jatiya Vidyalaya. His remains were discovered by a scrap collector along a secluded road connecting Basistha and Indira Nagar. The collector stumbled upon a black trolley bag with human limbs protruding from it and immediately alerted local authorities.
Responding swiftly, a team from Basistha Police Station reached the location and initiated an investigation. Using school records, the police identified the victim as Mrinmoy, who was listed as roll number 1 in his class.
Mother's Involvement Uncovered
Initial suspicion fell on Mrinmoy’s mother, Dipali Rajbongshi, a clinic employee who had filed a missing report just hours earlier. However, inconsistencies in her statements led investigators to probe deeper. Upon questioning, both Dipali and her partner, Jyotimoy Haloi — a temporary employee at the Accountant General’s office — reportedly confessed to the heinous crime.
According to police, the duo conspired to murder the child, allegedly viewing him as an obstacle to their relationship. On the day of the incident, they lured Mrinmoy from their Jayanagar residence using chocolates. He was then taken on a motorcycle to Basistha, with the suitcase in which his body was later found reportedly prearranged for the crime.
Crime Scene and Evidence
Authorities suspect the murder occurred close to the area where the body was dumped. Mrinmoy’s schoolbag was also found nearby, lending further weight to the theory. After committing the crime, the couple returned home, with Dipali continuing to act as a distraught mother in public.
The suspects were later taken to the crime scene for a detailed reconstruction, where they allegedly confessed their roles in the murder. A magistrate visited the site as part of the investigation, and Mrinmoy's remains have been sent for forensic examination to determine the exact cause and time of death.
Public Outrage and Legal Proceedings
The case has sparked widespread outrage across Guwahati, with citizens expressing shock and anger over the involvement of the child’s mother in such a brutal act. Dipali Rajbongshi is currently in police custody at Basistha Police Station, while further legal action is underway.
As the investigation continues, police are expected to file a detailed charge sheet under multiple sections of the IPC, including murder, criminal conspiracy, and destruction of evidence.
