Beef Thrown at Temple During Bakrid in Dhubri
Guwahati | June 13, 2025 —
In a bold and unprecedented move, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a shoot-at-sight order in Dhubri district after an incident that has sparked outrage across the state. On the occasion of Bakrid, miscreants allegedly threw a cow’s head or beef parts near the premises of a Hanuman temple, triggering severe communal tension.
The act, viewed as a deliberate provocation, has drawn sharp criticism from the public and political leaders alike. CM Sarma has vowed strict action, stating that such attempts to disturb communal harmony will not be tolerated under any circumstance.
CM’s Strong Statement on the Incident
Speaking on the matter, Chief Minister Sarma stated:
“Certain communal elements have attempted to desecrate Hindu temples and disturb peace during a sacred festival. Such anti-social behaviour will face zero tolerance. I have directed the police to act decisively, and shoot-at-sight orders have been issued for anyone found trying to repeat such actions.”
Sarma also emphasized that Naamghars (traditional Assamese prayer houses) and other religious sites must be protected at all costs from deliberate targeting by extremist elements.
Beef Desecration Sparks Outrage in Dhubri
The incident occurred on June 11, during Bakrid celebrations. Locals reported that animal remains were discovered near the Hanuman temple in a locality in Dhubri, a region that has witnessed communal tension in the past. Police and security forces were immediately deployed to prevent escalation.
While no violence was reported, public anger and protests erupted shortly after the discovery, with demands for arrests and strong deterrent actions.
Investigation Underway, Security Tightened
Dhubri police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident. CCTV footage is being analyzed, and multiple suspects are reportedly being questioned. The district administration has imposed Section 144, restricting large gatherings and enhancing police patrolling in sensitive areas.
Special police forces and intelligence teams have been deployed to maintain law and order in the area. “Those responsible will be brought to justice swiftly,” said a senior police official.
Appeal for Peace Amidst Religious Tensions
Religious leaders and civil society groups have appealed for calm and cooperation from both communities. Several organizations have condemned the act and supported the state government's call for maintaining peace.
