Zero FIR Filed in Assam, Case Transferred to Uttarakhand Police
📍Guwahati | June 13, 2025 —
In a tragic and deeply troubling development, the mysterious death of Rosmita Hojai, a young woman from Assam’s Dima Hasao district, has prompted Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to seek direct intervention from his Uttarakhand counterpart, Pushkar Singh Dhami. Rosmita's body was discovered in the Ganga River near Rishikesh, five days after she was reported missing under suspicious circumstances.
Missing After Recruitment Trip, Found Dead in Ganga
According to her family, Rosmita had recently travelled to Delhi to appear for a recruitment examination. Following the test, she reportedly accompanied two individuals to Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. On June 6, she was declared missing, and a Zero FIR was initially registered in Assam. The case was then transferred to the relevant police station in Uttarakhand for jurisdictional processing.
However, five days later, her body was discovered in the Ganga River — triggering widespread suspicion of foul play. The condition in which her body was recovered, combined with the lack of clarity surrounding her movements in Rishikesh, has caused deep concern among the public and her family.
CM Sarma Seeks Multi-Angle, Time-Bound Investigation
Taking serious note of the incident, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma communicated directly with Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, urging him to initiate a “multi-angle and time-bound probe” into the matter.
“I have spoken to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Uttarakhand to examine the issue closely so that justice can be delivered,” CM Sarma stated in an official press note, reinforcing the state government’s commitment to securing justice for Rosmita.
Family Cries for Justice, Alleges Criminal Involvement
Rosmita’s family, devastated by the tragedy, believes that her death was not accidental. They have demanded a swift and transparent investigation, alleging possible criminal involvement, including abduction or murder.
Sources close to the family suggest that she was in regular contact until her sudden disappearance, adding further suspicion to the case.
Assam, Uttarakhand Police Coordination Underway
In response to CM Sarma’s request, Uttarakhand authorities have reportedly assured full cooperation and have begun gathering CCTV footage, call records, and interrogating potential witnesses. Meanwhile, Assam Police is maintaining close contact with their counterparts in Rishikesh to monitor the investigation.
Public sentiment across Assam, particularly in Dima Hasao, has turned intense as student bodies and civil society groups have called for justice, holding candlelight marches and protests.
