PM Modi Makes First Visit to Manipur Since 2023 Violence, Launches Projects Worth ₹8,500 Crore
Imphal, September 13 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday made his first visit to Manipur since the outbreak of ethnic clashes in May 2023, marking a significant political and developmental outreach in the conflict-hit state.
During his visit, the Prime Minister inaugurated and laid foundation stones for developmental projects worth between ₹7,300 crore and ₹8,500 crore across Churachandpur and Imphal. These projects span key sectors such as infrastructure, housing, healthcare, and connectivity, aiming to accelerate growth and stability in the region.
Focus on Peace and Reconciliation
Addressing a gathering in Imphal, Modi emphasized that peace is essential for progress and urged all communities in Manipur to choose dialogue and reconciliation over conflict. He appealed to both the Meitei and Kuki groups to work together for a future of unity and stability, assuring that the central government would continue to make “every possible effort” to restore normalcy.
Interaction With Displaced Families
The Prime Minister also visited relief camps housing families displaced by the 2023 ethnic violence. Over 60,000 people remain affected, many of whom continue to live in temporary shelters. Modi announced that the government will construct around 7,000 permanent houses for families who lost their homes during the unrest, underlining the Centre’s commitment to rehabilitation and long-term peacebuilding.
Security Measures Tightened
Ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit, security was intensified across sensitive areas including Imphal and Churachandpur. Movement restrictions continue in parts of the state despite the reopening of National Highway 2, as armed groups have issued warnings in certain zones.
Government Crackdown and Development Push
In addition to development promises, authorities have intensified crackdowns, seizing illegal arms and ammunition in the valley districts. The state government has also instructed forest officials to remain on alert to curb poppy cultivation in the hill areas, aligning with the Centre’s efforts to check insurgency funding and narcotics trade.
A Turning Point for Manipur?
PM Modi’s visit is being seen as a crucial step in rebuilding trust between the Centre and Manipur’s communities after over two years of unrest. While development announcements bring hope, the real challenge lies in ensuring lasting peace, dialogue, and rehabilitation for the thousands still struggling with displacement.
