Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Calls for United Effort in BTC Elections, Hints at Post-Poll Alliance with BPF and UPPL
Guwahati, September 17: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that the upcoming Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections, slated for September 22, will be a tough contest with all major parties, including the BJP, putting up a strong fight.
Addressing reporters, Sarma admitted that the BJP may not be able to secure a majority on its own to form the council government. He, however, emphasized that the party’s focus is on consensus and collective governance in the Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD).
“I don’t think in BTC, BJP alone can form a government. But for the welfare of the people, we want to move forward together with Hagrama Mohilary’s Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and Pramod Boro’s United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL),” Sarma stated.
Highlighting the broader political alignment, the Chief Minister reminded that both BPF and UPPL are partners in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). “If you see, Hagrama Mohilary is also part of NDA like UPPL. So, after the elections, with everyone’s cooperation, the government will be formed,” he remarked.
While expressing confidence that the BJP will emerge as the single largest party, Sarma noted the political dynamics of the region. “What I can see is that BJP will get the maximum seats, but BTAD is not the same as Dispur. We need to think carefully and proceed with collective responsibility,” he added.
The BTC elections are being closely watched as they hold significant importance for political stability and development in the Bodoland region.
