Assam Rifles Recover Huge Cache of Explosives in Mizoram; CM N. Biren Singh Stresses on Time-Bound Peace Talks

Operation conducted under Spear Corps recovers over 5,800 gelignite rods and 6,000 detonators in Champhai District

Guwahati, October 19:
In a major operation to curb illegal smuggling and cross-border threats, Assam Rifles, operating under the Spear Corps of the Indian Army, recovered a large cache of explosives from Vaphai in Champhai District, Mizoram, on October 18, 2025.

According to official reports, the operation led to the recovery of 5,800 pieces of gelignite rods, 10,500 meters of cordtex, and 6,000 detonators. Two individuals transporting the explosives in a Bolero vehicle were apprehended during the raid.

The Assam Rifles’ swift action comes amid continuous efforts by security forces to curb the illegal movement of arms, explosives, and contraband items across India’s northeastern borders.

CM N. Biren Singh Calls for Time-Bound Peace Talks

Reacting to the development, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh lauded the Assam Rifles and the Indian Army for their successful operation and underlined the importance of national security.

“National security is the top priority. I salute the @adgpi and the @official_dgar, particularly those operating in the Northeast,” he said in a social media post.

“We need Suspension of Operations (SoO) or peace talks with the militants, but there should be time limits. Otherwise, many are using it as an advantage for recruitment and strengthening their groups,” he added.

Singh further emphasized that ongoing peace talks and SoO agreements with various insurgent groups should be concluded within a fixed timeframe to ensure permanent peace in the Northeast.

He cautioned that while such dialogues bring temporary calm, they often come “at the cost of the general public,” as governance on the ground remains a challenge.

Cross-Border Smuggling a Major Concern

Highlighting the recurring issue of cross-border illegal trade, Biren Singh also urged authorities to intensify efforts to curb arms and drug smuggling, which he said poses a significant threat to long-term stability in the region.

“Cross-border illegal arms and drug smuggling should be tackled firmly to ensure lasting peace,” Singh stated, tagging @PMOIndia, @HMOIndia, and @Spearcorps in his post.

Background

Champhai district, which shares a porous border with Myanmar, has been a hotspot for illegal trade and smuggling activities. The Indian Army and Assam Rifles have been conducting coordinated operations to intercept such movements and prevent the flow of explosives and contraband materials used by insurgent groups.
