Police chief directs intensified security measures; investigation underway to trace those responsible
Kokrajhar, October 23: Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh visited Kokrajhar on Thursday to review the law and order situation after a suspected IED explosion damaged a portion of the railway track between Kokrajhar and Salakati stations around midnight.
During his visit, the DGP held a high-level review meeting with senior officials of the police and other security agencies at the 7th Battalion Headquarters in Charaikhola. The meeting focused on assessing the situation and formulating measures to prevent any future incidents.
Harmeet Singh instructed officials to step up security surveillance throughout the district, particularly along railway routes and vital installations. He highlighted the need for strong coordination between state police, railway protection forces, and central agencies to ensure the safety of passengers and public infrastructure.
Speaking to reporters, the DGP confirmed that preliminary findings indicated the use of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). “Our forensic teams have collected evidence from the site. The investigation is in progress, and we are confident of identifying and arresting those behind the act soon,” he stated.
Following the blast, additional security personnel have been deployed across Kokrajhar, and patrolling along railway tracks has been intensified. Train movement on the affected section remains partially disrupted as repair work continues.
The explosion occurred about five kilometers east of Kokrajhar railway station, creating panic among local residents and passengers. Authorities have assured the public that all precautionary steps are being taken to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of travelers.
