CM Sarma Outlines Plans for Robust Legislation on Polygamy and Evangelism Curbing Measures
Guwahati, Assam- 12 February, 24: In a significant move, the Assam government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is poised to present the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill in the state assembly tomorrow. This legislation aims to standardize personal laws across different religious communities in the state.
Addressing the media, CM Sarma highlighted the government's commitment to addressing social issues, including the practice of polygamy. He stated that the proposed legislation would criminalize polygamy, signaling a strong stance against practices deemed detrimental to social harmony and gender equality.
Furthermore, CM Sarma emphasized the importance of curbing evangelism in Assam. He stressed the need for preserving the cultural and religious identities of different communities in the state. The proposed bill seeks to uphold the principle of religious freedom while discouraging forced or coercive religious conversions.
"We want to curb evangelism in Assam, and this Bill will be a very important milestone," CM Sarma asserted. "Whoever is Muslim, should remain Muslim, whoever is Christian, should remain Christian, and whoever is Hindu, let them remain Hindu."
