Reviving Congress in Assam: A Fresh Political Push
Diphu, Assam | May 26: In a major political development, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has been appointed as the new President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). The announcement was officially made by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Sunday, marking a significant reshuffle in the state leadership ahead of the crucial 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
The decision to elevate Gaurav Gogoi, a three-time Member of Parliament from Kaliabor and son of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, is being seen as a strategic move to inject fresh energy and leadership into the state unit of the party.
Acknowledging Leadership and Legacy
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Gaurav Gogoi expressed his gratitude to the Congress high command.
“I am grateful to Congress President Shri Mallikarjun Kharge ji, Leader of Opposition Shri Rahul Gandhi ji, General Secretary (Organisation) KC Venugopal ji, and General Secretary in-charge Assam Jitendra Singh ji for trusting me with this responsibility,” Gogoi wrote.
He also acknowledged the contributions of outgoing APCC President Bhupen Kumar Borah, who has led the party through a challenging phase, including the 2021 Assembly elections.
“Former PCC President Bhupen Kumar Borah led the party from the front and made a tremendous contribution,” Gogoi stated.
A Personal Commitment to Assam’s Future
In an emotionally resonant message, Gogoi reflected on the personal journey that led him here.
“I would not have been here without the guidance of my parents and the support of my family, especially my wife and children,” he said, adding that it is a “blessing to work with so many dedicated and inspiring senior leaders and workers in the Congress party in Assam.”
He concluded his message with a forward-looking vision:
“I look forward to working with my seniors and colleagues. In the days to come, I will seek the blessings of the people of Assam. I am confident that together we can create a better future for our state. Joi Ai Axom! Jai Hind!”
Strategic Significance for Congress in Assam
Political analysts view Gogoi’s appointment as part of the Congress’s broader effort to revamp its organizational structure in Assam and reconnect with its grassroots base. His leadership will be crucial in galvanizing the party's cadre, especially among youth and urban voters, and strengthening the opposition alliance INDIA bloc in the state.
Gogoi has been an active parliamentarian and a vocal critic of the central government on several key issues, including federalism, unemployment, and regional development. His appointment signals a more assertive and issue-based approach by the Congress in Assam politics.
What’s Next?
As Gaurav Gogoi prepares to take charge formally, party workers across the state are expected to rally in support. A series of public engagements, consultations with senior leaders, and grassroots outreach programs are likely to be rolled out in the coming weeks.
This leadership transition comes at a crucial time as political parties gear up for the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections and aim to consolidate their positions following the Lok Sabha polls.
