Indore resident Raja Raghuvanshi was killed during a honeymoon trip to Meghalaya in a pre-planned murder executed by his wife and hired accomplices. The case has shocked both Madhya Pradesh and Meghalaya.
Shillong, June 9 — In a chilling revelation, the Meghalaya Police confirmed that the murder of Indore-based tourist Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon was masterminded by none other than his wife, Sonam. The 29-year-old victim was found dead in a remote area of East Khasi Hills district earlier this month, prompting a high-level investigation.
Meghalaya DGP Idashisha Nongrang, addressing the media on Monday morning, stated that Sonam surrendered before the Nandganj Police Station in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh. She was arrested shortly after surrendering.
According to the DGP, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to crack the case conducted overnight raids, which led to the arrest of three other individuals allegedly hired by Sonam to carry out the murder. “One of the accused was apprehended from Uttar Pradesh, while two others were nabbed from Indore,” DGP Nongrang confirmed.
Murder During Honeymoon Raises Questions
The victim and his wife had reportedly reached Meghalaya for their honeymoon. However, what appeared to be a romantic getaway turned into a crime scene when Raghuvanshi's body was discovered under suspicious circumstances. The investigation took a dramatic turn when evidence pointed toward a planned conspiracy involving the victim’s spouse.
Police sources indicated that Sonam had contacted the attackers well in advance and coordinated the murder plot while on the honeymoon. The motive, although under investigation, is suspected to involve financial or personal disputes.
Investigation Spanning Three States
The murder case has spanned at least three states—Meghalaya, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh—requiring inter-state coordination by police teams. The SIT was tasked with examining digital communication, phone records, and surveillance footage, all of which reportedly led to strong evidence against the accused.
DGP Nongrang lauded the swift efforts of the Meghalaya and collaborating state police departments, stating, “The breakthrough came after critical intelligence inputs and cross-state cooperation.”
Legal Proceedings and Further Investigation
Sonam and the three other accused are expected to be brought to Meghalaya for further questioning and legal proceedings. Charges of murder, criminal conspiracy, and destruction of evidence are likely to be filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which recently replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Officials said that a detailed chargesheet will be prepared once forensic reports and digital evidence analysis are completed.
Public Reaction
The gruesome nature of the crime has shocked residents in both Indore and Meghalaya. Many expressed disbelief over the fact that such a meticulously planned murder could be executed during a honeymoon trip.
