Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma Announces Pushback of 24 Bangladeshi Nationals Across Border

Sarma’s remarks on social media highlight Assam’s firm policy on protecting land, identity, and security from illegal infiltration.

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that 24 Bangladeshi nationals who had crossed into Indian territory were identified and subsequently pushed back across the international border.

Taking to microblogging site X (formerly Twitter), CM Sarma wrote in Hindi, “बेचारे भटक गए थे, उन्हें उनकी राह दिखाई और उनके घर भेज दिया। Often a certain section of people forget where their original home is and wander on this side of the border but being a gracious nation, we PUSH them BACK. 24 Bangladeshis have been PUSHED BACK today. Happy journey!”

The Chief Minister’s remarks highlight Assam’s firm stance on illegal immigration, a long-debated issue in the state. Sarma’s post also carried a satirical undertone, suggesting that while such infiltrations are not uncommon, India responds by sending back those who cross over illegally.

The issue of cross-border migration from Bangladesh has been one of the most politically sensitive topics in Assam for decades, with concerns over demographic shifts, cultural identity, and security implications. Successive governments have taken measures to strengthen border management, including fencing and stricter surveillance along vulnerable stretches of the Indo-Bangladesh border.

CM Sarma has repeatedly emphasized his government’s commitment to ensuring that Assam’s land and identity are protected from illegal infiltration. The latest pushback, involving 24 individuals, reaffirms this stance and underscores coordination between state agencies and border security forces.

While the Chief Minister’s post has drawn attention on social media, it is expected to further intensify the debate around illegal immigration in Assam, an issue deeply linked with the state’s political and social landscape.
